'Richest poker tournament in Africa' wraps up

The ninth All Africa Poker Tournament was a much-anticipated event, and it showed as 120 players & women poker players came out to play, creating a more than R3 million prize pool and the "richest poker tournament in Africa."

Outdoing them all to take home the top prize of R1 million as well as a seat in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event was 26-year-old Claude Sacks.

Sacks went heads-up against Neville Eber, a former All Africa Poker finalist, to earn his win. Having to fight back after losing most of his stack, Sacks proved his skill and his fighting spirit. After 30 hours of play from start to finish at Piggs Peak Casino, he finally got his win. Play online poker.

The tournament was also filmed to be broadcast later on the All Africa Poker Channel.

This was the last tournament before players head to Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker.

Sacks joins Eber, Darryn van Heerden, Ray Rahme and Ryan Brauer as part of the Team All Africa Poker in the Main Event in July. Stay tuned to our Live Tournament Section to see keep an eye out for their names and see how they do. Play poker wallpapers.

Bryn Mawr woman comes up aces in World Series of Poker

Beth Shak doesn't fit the stereotype of the Friday night poker player. She's attractive, a mother of five and doesn't even smoke cigars or guzzle beer when she plays cards.

"I drink water and chew mints," Shak says.

Shak, 39, who lives in a $3 million home on two acres along a secluded lane in Bryn Mawr, can handle herself at a poker table, however.

A relative novice, she walked off with $328,683 in the 38th Annual World Series of Poker Tournament early this morning in Las Vegas, event officials confirmed & also online poker pro.

It was one of the biggest poker jackpots ever won by a woman poker player - and considerably larger than any ever won by her husband, Daniel Shak, an oil-futures trader who happens to be a world-class player himself.

"We're a poker family," said Beth Shak, fresh - albeit exhausted - from her triumph.

"I haven't slept in three days," said Shak, reached by phone late this afternoon. She had just flown to New York on business. Naturally, she and two of her children played cards on the plane. And next week she will return to Las Vegas to pursue her goal: to finish first in a competition. Download poker wallpapers.

Shak came tantalizingly close to realizing that ambition this week in only her third year of professional play. She finished second in the fiercely competitive No-Limit, Hold 'Em $3,000 Buy-In, one of 55 World Series events held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

As the term suggests, "no-limit" means no betting limits, and Shak managed to beat poker legend Phil Hellmuth, one of the elite in the business. He is also notorious as a complainer.

"He's the best No-Limit Hold 'Em player out there," said Shak. "But I have no fear. I'm not afraid of anybody."

She and Hellmuth were among 827 competitors & women poker pros in the Hold 'Em competition, which was spread over three days. The players are broken into groups of nine. Each player receives two cards face down and places bets. Eventually five more cards are placed face up on the table for all to see. The hands are decided on who has the five best available cards. Hold 'Em is the most-popular poker game on TV, a medium that has heightened poker's popularity. Experts say that the current poker craze was unleashed in 2003 when star Chris Moneymaker (yes, that's allegedly his real name) won $2.3 million in the World Series of Poker televised on ESPN. That was about the time that Beth Shak got into the game, picking up on her husband's interest.

"It was something he loved, and I fell in love with it," the Cheltenham High School grad recalled.

She knew right away that she would be a winner. "It's kind of an innate thing," Shak said. "You're either good or you're not.

"I don't practice. You don't practice poker, you play poker."

In June 2005, she entered a women's competition in the World Series, and finished eighth. She says she won't do that again.

"I don't really enjoy playing with women," said Shak, whose children range in age from 11 to 20. "There are a select few amazing women poker players," she said, but "my goal is to win a world series event in a mixed event."

When they aren't playing poker or working, Shak and her husband are involved with several charities, particularly the palliative care program at Children's Hospital.

Beth Shak also runs a vintage-clothing business and is trying to patent a medical gown she invented. It has slits in the sleeves to accommodate intravenous tubes. Play $500 match poker bonus.

However, temporarily at least, poker is her passion.

"It looks right now that poker is where I'm heading," she said. Stay tuned to our poker blog for updates.

More Co-Sponsors for Online Poker - Online Gambling Bill by Barney Frank

While most poker players & women poker players are watching the World Series of Poker Tournament running in Vegas, Rep. Barney Frank, who is also chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and author of HR 2046 (the bill calling for online poker in the United States to be licensed and regulated by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network), is back in Washington using his political experience and influence to steadily build support for his legislation.

Online poker and online gambling companies licensed under Frank's bill would be exempt from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) that became law last October.

The most dramatic supporter for Frank's HR 2046 bill was added during the Financial Services Committee Hearing last Friday when Indiana representative Julia Carson announced her switch away from the UIGEA, when no one could answer her question why Indiana gamblers could bet on the Kentucky Derby (horseracing) online but not other forms of Internet gambling.

Reports from the hearing were that the witnesses and the committee members sat in stunned silence waiting for anyone to answer, "...but all that came was a feeble mumble from someone on the panel that it should be legal." Download poker wallpapers.

Minutes later, Carson repeated her question and once again received no answer. She then declared her support for Frank's bill and said she had been mistaken last year in voting for the UIGEA. Play online poker.

Frank aides report that the bill, HR 2046 otherwise known as the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) recently added three more sponsors to the growing roster: Representatives Howard L. Berman, Bob Filner and James McGovern. Adventure route 66 poker.

Including Barney Frank, that now makes 23 Congressmen and Congresswomen who support the bill.

WILL YOU SUPPORT FRANK'S BILL ??

Kelly Larkin, the director of scheduling for Frank's House Financial Services Committee said that it could be "vital" for citizens who support Frank's bill to contact their individual state political representatives to stress their support.

The Poker Players Alliance website offers a contact list and letter template for writing your congressperson (by zipcode) making it quick and easy to even add highly valued personal comments. Stay tuned to our poker blog for more updates.

The World Series of Poker Begins

The Grand-Daddy of them all, the World Series of Poker, begins on June 1st. A dazzling array of different poker events kicks off on the 1st, beginning with a mixed Hold'em event and a Casino Employees event, and ending with the $10,000 main event, which will conclude on July 17th. Between now and then there will be an endless amount of tournaments, as most days will feature two tournaments; normally one tournament with a higher buy-in, and one tournament with a lower buy-in for the amateur players.

There are many different storylines that will be running throughout this year's World Series of Poker, including:

-will "online" players continue their recent dominance at live events, and take down a number of gold bracelets, or will the "old guard" including the likes of Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and others take back their live poker crowns?

-how much of an impact will the UIGEA make at this year's World Series of Poker?

-how many online qualifiers will actually make the trip to Las Vegas instead of simply withdrawing the cash from their accounts? Online poker rooms are no longer permitted to buy in their qualifiers directly into the main event, and have instead opted to simply deposit the cash in their player's accounts

-will Jamie Gold even come close to winning the main event again?

-in light of the recent new legislation, will the US Government be looking to arrest any of the high profile players that are high in the ranks of online poker room companies such as Full Tilt Poker?

-who will be the breakout star of this year's World Series of Poker?

-will Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson continue to add to their impressive collection of bracelets?

-how many events will Phil Ivey play?

-will there be any multiple bracelet winners this year?

So many storylines. The action kicks off...
