Poker Runs for Charity

Poker News: There's a saying among motorcyclists that "it isn't the destination, it's the journey."And on a sunny, almost picture-perfect first Sunday of summer, 62 motorcyclists helped deal a winning hand for the Freetown Memorial Park. The riders took part in a unique poker run, an event that raised about $3,000 to benefit the town's Memorial Park at Chase Road and Memorial Drive. Play online poker

The memorial park is the brainchild of Elton Ashley III, who appropriately is the chairman of the Memorial Park Committee. "I came up with the idea from visiting memorial parks located in cities "¦ and we had no great place to honor vets in our town. Since I work at the police station "¦ what greater place is there than Memorial Drive. Play route 66 poker

"When I first thought of this I was thinking of a small stone, maybe a flag pole," Mr. Ashley said. "But when I met up with these great vets, it turned into a 2-acre memorial. Now it will expand from not only a place to honor vets, but also people who have served the poker community, police and fire. In the future, we will have a stone for firefighters and one for police." Poker runs are a fund-raising staple for bikers, because they incorporate a ride through back country roads, meeting some nice people, and usually ending with some sort of great meal. The intent of a poker run is to get the best hand by picking a card out of a bag at predesignated stops. On this particular run, each rider paid $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the ride to get a sheet of directions. At the end, each ticket holder was dealt a hand, with the winning hand taking the pot.The run started at the Freetown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6643, stopped at the VFW posts in Bridgewater and Norton and then rambled to the Freetown memorial before returning to the Freetown post. I've ridden the roads used for the poker run many times and, every time I do, each ride is a little bit different. The angle of the sun, condition of the road, the green of the trees, the smell of the flowers, even the people you meet along the way. And for them, I always offer a friendly wave, a biker tradition. If they don't wave back, I've done my part to brighten their day. Download poker wallpapers

I broke off the suggested path early and rumbled over to one of my favorite roads in SouthCoast, Route 105 running between the Quitticas Pond in Lakeville, intent on leaning the bike through the short stretch of twisties. Women poker players joining would add to the run
Motorcycles aren't meant to turn through the turns. With the two wheels acting as gyroscopes, you turn to the right by pushing the right handlebar, making the front wheel actually turn left for you to go right. Leaning, counterbalancing with your weight, the bike floats under you, moving left and right with each curve. It's probably the closest thing many of us will come to flying, without flying.
